01 / Why it matters
Romeo sits on the northern, half-rural edge of Macomb County and looks like a 19th-century postcard. It was once a timber trading center, dozens of Victorian mansions built by wealthy lumber families still stand, and the downtown never had a major fire, so some shops and restaurants still have Civil War-era tin ceilings.
The name is a story in itself: the place was called Hoxie's Settlement after an innkeeper until merchant Nathaniel Taylor's wife suggested Romeo for being short, musical, classical and uncommon. Since 1994, every Valentine's Day it offers a special dual postmark with Juliette, Georgia, a wink at Shakespeare.
It's a festival town too. Since 1931 Labor Day weekend has meant the peach festival, with parades, a Peach Queen and a car show, and on Halloween thousands of trick-or-treaters flock to the over-the-top displays on Tillson Street. From 1904 to 1908 the village was home to the Detroit Auto Vehicle Company, one of the auto industry's early ventures.

Over Labor Day weekend the whole village celebrates with a children's parade and a hometown parade, the Peach Queen, a classic car show, carnival rides, craft shows, concerts and bed races.
