Where do you recharge in Detroit?

Where do you recharge in Detroit?

No thermal springs here, but there's a wood-fired sauna on the Detroit River sand, a bathhouse open since 1930, a saltwater grotto in an 1891 clubhouse and nearly five miles of riverfront path. Even by Budapest standards, it's a surprisingly good lineup.

Where can you work up a sweat?

Budapest runs on thermal water; Detroit runs on wood-fired Finnish saunas and an old-school bathhouse. Two heads-ups: swimsuits are required in mixed sessions, and the wave of steam off the stones goes by its Finnish name, löyly. Details as of October 1, 2026; confirm on the official site before you book.

Where do you go to get outside?

The riverfront is open daily from 6 AM to 10 PM. The greenways start here, and Belle Isle is a walk away over the MacArthur Bridge.

Which trail should you walk, run or ride?

  • The Riverwalk

About 4.75 continuous miles from Gabriel Richard Park by the MacArthur Bridge to Ralph Wilson Park in the west, for anything without a motor: feet, bikes, skates. USA Today 10Best readers voted it the country's best riverwalk three years running.

  • Dequindre Cut

Nearly two miles along a sunken former rail line, with a 20-foot-wide paved path and graffiti all the way. It links Eastern Market with the riverfront, and there's an outdoor fitness park by the Woodbridge entrance.

  • Belle Isle

A 985-acre island park in the middle of the river. The Piet Oudolf garden is open year-round from 5 AM to 10 PM, and the Ralph Wilson Gateway here is the official southern trailhead of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail.

  • Joe Louis Greenway

A planned greenway of about 27 miles through Detroit, Dearborn, Hamtramck and Highland Park. Nearly six miles were open by October 2025 and another six are expected by the end of 2026. The Dequindre Cut is part of it, and it links up with the Riverwalk.

  • Southwest and Archer greenways

The Southwest Greenway runs just over half a mile from Corktown and Michigan Central down to the river. The Mayor Dennis W. Archer Greenway gives east side neighborhoods a 1.2-mile link to the Riverwalk.

  • Palmer Park

Woodland paths, Lake Frances and a historic log cabin across roughly 296 acres in north Detroit.

Who do you run with, and where do you get a bike?

  • Free run and walk clubs

The Riverfront Conservancy calendar lists We Run 313's Thursday-evening 5K and 10K, the beginner-friendly Two Mile Tuesdays and the Detroit Social Walk Club's Saturday walk from Cullen Plaza.

  • A queer run club in Ferndale

Stonewall Run Club's free 5K starts outside Affirmations and follows Nine Mile Road; every pace is welcome.

  • MoGo bike share

On the riverfront you'll find MoGo stations at Mt. Elliott Park, Valade Park, the Dequindre Cut, GM Plaza and the Southwest Greenway. Rental bikes aren't allowed on the QLINE.

  • Wheelhouse Detroit

Bike rentals, repairs and guided rides at Cullen Plaza right on the Riverwalk, Wednesday through Monday, 11 AM to 7 PM.

  • Free Press Marathon

October 16–18, 2026, with the main races on Sunday, October 18. The International Half-Marathon course crosses the Ambassador Bridge and goes through the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel, so you need a valid travel document.

  • A Thanksgiving run

On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2026, The Parade Company, which runs the parade, also stages its Turkey Trot race.

  • The island beach

Belle Isle's buoyed swim area is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 5 AM to 9 PM.

What people ask about wellness in Detroit

Is there a thermal bath like in Budapest?

There are no thermal springs. The closest thing is The Schvitz in the North End, open to guests since 1930 with saunas and a pool, or the saltwater grotto at The Detroit Club after a spa treatment.

Do I need a swimsuit in the sauna?

In mixed sessions, yes. At The Schvitz it's optional during men-only and women-only hours, while at Islandview you always need to wear something.

Can you really plunge into the Detroit River?

SOMi guests do, walking in slowly: the river is about 60°F in October and drops to the mid-30s by February. Thirty seconds is plenty. Prefer to stay dry? A chair in the open air cools you down too.

Do I need a pass for Belle Isle?

Not on foot, by bike or on DDOT's #12 bus. If you drive, your car needs a Recreation Passport; check the current price on the Michigan DNR site.

How much do I tip for a massage?

For a massage or facial, 15–20 percent is standard.

Where can I do yoga as a visitor?

Citizen Yoga on downtown's Library Street has showers and changing rooms, and Sculpt Pilates in Midtown runs small reformer classes that welcome first-timers.

Where should I run if I'm staying downtown?

Head down to the Riverwalk: east to Gabriel Richard Park or west to Ralph Wilson Park without a single car, or up the Dequindre Cut to Eastern Market.
