01 / Why it matters

Why Plymouth matters

Plymouth got its start in 1825, when Luther Lincoln received land under a patent signed by President John Quincy Adams; it became a village in 1867 and a city on May 20, 1932. Downtown grew up around Kellogg Park, and up by the tracks sits Old Village, which George Starkweather made the new center of town in 1871 when he moved his store next to the depot.

This is where an American childhood icon was born. The Plymouth Iron Windmill Company, founded in 1882, made windmills and started giving away an air rifle with them in 1888. Legend says the boss fired it once and shouted, "Boy, that's a daisy!" The gun became the hit, the company renamed itself Daisy in 1895, and it made BB guns here until moving to Arkansas in 1958.

Plymouth is an events town: in winter ice sculptures take over downtown for the Plymouth Ice Festival, July brings the Art in the Park fair, and summer Fridays mean live music. Fun fact: the city says it's the only place in Michigan where railroad tracks head off in all four directions.
