01 / Why it matters
Why Plymouth Charter Township matters
Plymouth Township wraps around the city of Plymouth but runs itself, with its own police and fire departments. It used to be much bigger: its southern part became Canton in 1834, and in 1898 Northville Township broke away too, supposedly because folks up there felt the township only paid attention to Plymouth village.
Today it's quiet neighborhoods, a golf course and office parks, with I-275, I-96 and M-14 all meeting here. For hockey fans the big draw is USA Hockey Arena: built in 1996, bought by USA Hockey in 2015, it's home to the National Team Development Program, and it hosted the 2017 IIHF Women's World Championship.
Hines Park runs through here along the Middle Rouge, and the I-275 Metro Trail stays inside the park to get bikes around the freeway interchange. The former St. John's Provincial Seminary trained priests from 1949 to 1988 and reopened as a hotel in 2006.
