01 / Why it matters
Grosse Pointe Park is the Pointe closest to downtown Detroit, and it touches Detroit on two sides, at Alter Road and along Mack Avenue. Its Windmill Pointe corner sits right where Lake St. Clair ends and the Detroit River begins.
Its story starts with a village getting cut in half: in 1907 Detroit annexed the western part of the village of Fairview up to Alter Road, and the rest incorporated that same year as the Village of Grosse Pointe Park. It became a city in 1950 to lock in its independence from Detroit and its township.
The west end, which locals call the Cabbage Patch, is denser and more urban, with shops, schools and restaurants close by. Head toward the lake and the houses keep growing until you hit the multimillion-dollar homes on Windmill Pointe Drive. The lakefront parks are residents-only, but anyone can drop into the Park's shops and restaurants, or the weekly farmers market in the warm months.

Detroit annexed the western part of the village of Fairview up to Alter Road, and the rest became the Village of Grosse Pointe Park that same year.
The Stratton House went up on Three Mile Drive; it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984.
The village reincorporated as a city, shielding itself from Detroit annexation and breaking from its township.
