01 / Why it matters
Grosse Pointe Shores is the northernmost of the five Pointes and the only one that doesn't touch Detroit. It also spills across two counties: most of it is in Wayne, a sliver is in Macomb, and the city limits run out to the middle of Lake St. Clair, all the way to the Canadian border.
It incorporated as a village in 1911 and only became a city in 2009; its official name is still the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, a Michigan City. In 2011 city leaders even floated moving the whole city into Macomb County, where taxes are lower.
The main event is the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House. Henry Ford's son and his wife moved in in 1928; Albert Kahn designed the house and Jens Jensen the grounds. Today you can take a guided tour and wander the lakeside estate. From the water you'll also spot the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club's Mediterranean-style clubhouse, a shoreline landmark since 1929.

The Village of Grosse Pointe Shores was incorporated, reaching into both Grosse Pointe Township in Wayne County and Lake Township in Macomb County.
Edsel and Eleanor Ford moved into their new house on Gaukler Point.
On July 4 the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club clubhouse opened.
Edsel Ford died at his Gaukler Point home, age 49.
Eleanor Ford died, having asked that the estate be used “for the benefit of the public.” Today it's open for guided tours.
The village incorporated as a city, and both townships ceased to exist.
