01 / Why it matters
Chelsea sits about 15 miles west of Ann Arbor, and the railroad made it a town: the Michigan Central laid track here in 1848, and the town got its name in 1850, when the station opened. The red-brick Glazier Stove Company clock tower rises over downtown, and the Main Street area has been a historic district since 2011.
Jiffy mix, the first prepared baking mix in the United States, has been made here since 1930, and you can spot the mill's silos from way off. Jeff Daniels, who grew up in Chelsea, opened his own theater here in 1991, the Purple Rose. And in April 2025 the town went viral when about 300 people formed a human chain and passed 9,100 books hand to hand into a local bookstore's new shop.
It's in Washtenaw County, so statistically it belongs to the Ann Arbor metro area and counts as Metro Detroit only within the wider Detroit–Warren–Ann Arbor combined statistical area. From Detroit you get here on I-94, which forms the city's southern edge.
