Why Brighton matters
Brighton sits where I-96 meets US 23, an easy drive from Detroit, Ann Arbor and Lansing. Downtown centers on the Millpond, with a boardwalk, a park and free outdoor summer concerts in the Live at Millpond Park series.
The real draw is what's around it: more than 50 lakes, wetlands and golf courses. The state's Brighton Recreation Area covers nearly 5,000 acres of woods and lakes, and in winter the man-made slopes of Mt. Brighton open up.
Livingston County is part of the six-county Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro area, so Brighton is officially Metro Detroit, out on its greener western edge. When Livingston County was organized in 1836, Brighton even contested Howell for the county seat.

Brighton through the years
- 1832
Maynard Maltby settles along the stream called Ore Creek.
- 1838
The settlement's name is changed to Brighton.
- 1867
Brighton incorporates as a village.
- 1879
Local contractor James Collett completes the Old Town Hall.

Brighton becomes a city.
- 1961
Mt. Brighton ski area opens.
