Why Roseville matters
Roseville is strung along Gratiot Avenue between Eastpointe and Mount Clemens, with I-696 slicing through the middle and I-94 running along the east side. At first glance it's a quiet suburb of yards and driveways, but it's worth digging a little.
In 1919 the Packard Motor Car Company opened Packard Field at Gratiot and Frazho, Michigan's first commercial airport, which brought air shows, flight training and celebrity pilots to town. The Eastgate Shopping Center opened on the old airfield in 1954.
The name and the map keep older layers too: the township became Erin in 1843 thanks to strong Irish sentiment, the village formed in 1926 and the city in 1958. Macomb Mall, one of the area's early enclosed malls, opened in 1964 and is still going.

An enclosed mall on Gratiot, open since 1964, with big-box anchors, shops and places to eat under one roof.

Roseville through the years
- 1840
William Rose opens a permanent post office and names it Roseville.
- 1843
Thanks to strong Irish sentiment, the township is renamed Erin.
- 1886
The Erin Township Hall goes up at Gratiot and 11 Mile.
- 1919
The Packard Motor Car Company opens Packard Field, Michigan's first commercial airport.
- 1926
Roseville becomes a village; its municipal building goes up at Gratiot and Meier in 1929.
- 1958
The village and the rest of Erin Township incorporate as the City of Roseville, with Arthur Waterman as first mayor.

- Walter C. Wetzel Enlisted from Roseville in 1941; on April 3, 1945, in Germany, he smothered enemy grenades with his body and was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
