Why Gibraltar matters
Gibraltar is a small town built on the water in southern Downriver: marinas, boats and an island, Horse Island, reached by a single bridge. Settlers were here by 1811, the Gibralter & Flat Rock Company platted it in 1837, and it became a village in 1954 and a city in 1961.
The Battle of Brownstown was fought on August 5, 1812, where Carlson High School stands today: Tecumseh and his allies ambushed an American detachment escorting supplies to Detroit, and the Americans got only half their men out. Eleven days later Detroit surrendered.
The 1925 bridge to Horse Island is a real rarity, a single-span closed-spandrel concrete arch, and the city says no other bridge in Michigan has its steep hump. Part of Humbug Marsh, the Detroit River's last wild stretch of mainland shore, lies in Gibraltar, and there's a small history museum upstairs at City Hall.
