01 / Why it matters

Why Farmington Hills matters

Farmington Hills is the old Farmington Township, wrapped around the small city of Farmington. Plenty of people think of them as one place, and they do share a school district and a library, but they've been separate cities since 1973, when the township incorporated together with two earlier villages, Quakertown and Wood Creek Farms.

It grew fast in the mid-20th century and today it's a serious office town: as of 2026 Bosch and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services have their U.S. headquarters here, and Nissan has run its North American technical center here since 1991. I-696, I-275 and M-5 all cut through the city, so it's easy to reach from anywhere by car.

For visitors, the big reason to come is the Zekelman Holocaust Center on Orchard Lake Road, Michigan's largest Holocaust museum. Out on Grand River, the Botsford Inn recalls the stagecoach days: Henry Ford courted his future wife, Clara, in the 1836 building and bought it in 1924.
