Detroit radio history

One of the first regular radio broadcasts went on air in Detroit. Eight moments from 8MK to the North End's community station.

  1. 1920

    WWJ Newsradio 950 WWJ

    On August 20 the Detroit News Radiophone starts daily broadcasts as 8MK. WWJ still calls itself America's Pioneer Broadcasting Station and is Michigan's only all-news station.

  2. 1922

    WJR News Talk 760 WJR

    On May 4 the future WJR signs on as WCX. The 50,000-watt AM signal reaches much of the Great Lakes region at night.

  3. 1948

    WDET-FM 101.9 WDET

    Detroit's FM era begins: today's WRCJ signs on as WDTR in August, and WDET, now Wayne State University's public station, on December 18.

  4. 1956

    WMKM Gospel 1440 WMKM

    In November WCHB 1440 goes on air in Inkster: the area's first station built and programmed entirely by and for African Americans, playing soul through the 1960s and 70s.

  5. 1961

    WGPR Hot 107.5

    WGPR 107.5 signs on December 6. It is still owned by the International Free and Accepted Modern Masons and now runs urban contemporary as Hot 107.5.

  6. 1971

    WRIF 101 WRIF

    On February 14 an FCC clerical error turns WXYZ-FM into WRIF. The name stuck, and 101 WRIF has been Detroit's rock station ever since.

    WCBN-FM WCBN FM

    On January 23 the University of Michigan's student station WCBN reaches FM. Its freeform format lets each host decide what plays; it is one of the longest-running freeform stations in the US.

    WNUC-LP 96.7 FM Detroit

    On May 28 the North End's community station WNUC 96.7 signs on: a low-power FM station run by a neighborhood coalition.
