The Wayne County Airport Authority is the county agency that operates Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) in Romulus and Willow Run Airport (YIP) in Van Buren Township. The Michigan Legislature created it in March 2002, independent of Wayne County government, and it took over the airports that August. Its roots go back to 1930, when the Wayne County Road Commission built Wayne County Airport; today a seven-member board oversees it.
