Warrendale is a residential neighborhood on Detroit's far west side, wedged between the city of Dearborn on two sides and Dearborn Heights on a third, roughly bounded by Joy Road, Ford Road, Greenfield Road and Rouge Park. It began as the independent Village of Warrendale in the early twentieth century before its residents voted for annexation into Detroit so they could tie into the city's water system; the former village became a Detroit neighborhood in the 1920s. Most of its modest brick bungalows and two-family homes were built in the 1940s, filling in what had been farmland decades earlier. Rapper Tee Grizzley grew up here with his grandmother near Joy Road and the Southfield Freeway in the 1990s and 2000s before his 2016 breakout single “First Day Out” launched his music career. Warrendale remains a working-class residential neighborhood today, its streets still lined with the same postwar housing stock.
