The Birmingham Village Players is a community theater founded in 1923, making it the third-oldest continuously running community theater in Michigan. Its first production, staged in 1924 at the original Birmingham Community House at Maple and Bates, was so well received that the fledgling company soon needed a permanent home. Members bought a lot on Chestnut Street facing Woodward Avenue, and the company has performed from that address since 1926, giving the theater a stage nearly a century old. Actress Elizabeth Berkley, later known for Showgirls and Saved by the Bell, grew up nearby and performed here as a child in the 1980s, playing Baby June in a production of Gypsy. The all-volunteer company still stages a full season of plays and musicals in its Woodward Avenue playhouse today.
