Trinity Cemetery has served Detroit's east side for generations, going back to its roots as the burial ground of the city's German Lutheran community, which is why longtime Detroiters still sometimes call it the German Lutheran Cemetery. Blues and gospel singer Sippie Wallace, who moved to Detroit in the 1920s and spent most of her long life and career in the city, was buried here in 1986 after her death. Wallace had recorded classic blues songs in the 1920s, largely stepped away from secular music for decades to sing gospel, and then returned to the blues stage in her later years, earning a Grammy nomination not long before she died. The cemetery remains an active burial ground on Mt Elliott Street today.
