Founded in 2005, the Traverse City Film Festival filled downtown every late July for years. Now it runs year-round as TCFF Tuesdays at the State Theatre: 52 films in 52 weeks.

The Traverse City Film Festival was founded in 2005 by filmmaker Michael Moore, author Doug Stanton and photographer John Robert Williams, with the motto “Just Great Movies.” For years it filled downtown Traverse City every late July with independent films and documentaries, including free outdoor screenings. The nonprofit also restored and runs the State Theatre. The traditional summer festival has ended; in its place is the year-round “TCFF Tuesdays” (52 films in 52 weeks) at the State Theatre, with summer, fall and winter seasons. The fall season runs September 29 to December 15, 2026.
