The War Memorial
Lakefront Alger estate in Grosse Pointe Farms: WWII memorial, community arts hub and a 600-guest ballroom on Lake St. Clair.

01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Charles A. Platt designed this Italian Renaissance-style lakefront house, The Moorings, for Russell A. Alger Jr. in 1910. From 1936 to 1948 it was a branch of the Detroit Institute of Arts, and in 1949 it was dedicated as a memorial to the 3,500 Grosse Pointers who served and 126 who died in World War II, and as a community cultural center. The Fred M. Alger Center, opened in 2022, adds a 600-guest ballroom facing the lake, and the grounds hold the only official reproduction of Omaha Beach's Les Braves sculpture.
