Promoters Dave Leone and Ed 'Punch' Andrews opened the Hideout as a teenagers-only dance club at 20542 Harper Avenue in Harper Woods in 1963, part of a small chain of Hideout clubs Leone ran around metro Detroit. The club became a proving ground for young Detroit-area rock bands, hosting acts including Bob Seger and the Last Heard, the Underdogs, Doug Brown and the Omens (featuring a young Glenn Frey, later of the Eagles), and Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. In the fall of 1964, Leone gave a three-song audition to the newly formed Pleasure Seekers, a girl group fronted by teenage sisters that included future glam-rock star Suzi Quatro; by 1965 the group was a regular Hideout act, and at the end of that year Leone produced their first single for his own Hideout Records label. Leone's Hideout clubs and label were central to Detroit's mid-1960s teen rock scene before it gave way to the psychedelic ballroom era later in the decade.
