The Gold Dollar opened in the 1930s and from 1956 to the late 1980s was a popular drag-show bar. In 1996 new owner Neil Yee turned it into a small live-music bar with an elevated stage, and it became the cradle of Detroit's garage-rock revival: The White Stripes played their first show there in August 1997, and The Go, the Detroit Cobras and dozens of other bands played regularly. When it closed in 2001, a local musician called it “a rite of passage for every aspiring band that comes through Detroit.”
