The Encore was founded in 2008 by Broadway actor Dan Cooney and Dexter residents Anne and Paul Koch. For 12 seasons it played in a converted 6,000-square-foot factory garage. In 2019 it bought the 20,000-square-foot historic Copeland building, Dexter's original 1800s school, from Dexter Community Schools, and a $2 million campaign turned it into the Maas Theatre, which opened for season 13. It's an Actors' Equity professional musical theater with more than 200 shows and concerts to its name. Season 18 (2026-27) opens with Sister Act, October 8–18, 2026, and closes with A Chorus Line, June 17 to July 18, 2027, with tribute concerts in between.
