01 / The story of this place

Temple Bar opened in 1927; owner George Boukas first walked through its door at age four, and the bar has turned down every offer from developers around Little Caesars Arena. Behind the glass-block, rainbow-neon facade is a small gay bar “with a big disco heart”: an old-school elevated DJ booth, a disco ball and an intimate dance floor, with an RA calendar full of house, disco and techno parties like Body Worx, Eur Haus, No Facade and Booty Freaks. Part of the facade collapsed on May 24, 2024; after a community GoFundMe and a restoration approved by the Historic District Commission, the bar reopened on December 17, 2024.
