Teamsters Local 299 has operated out of its union hall on Trumbull Avenue in Corktown since the mid-twentieth century, representing Detroit-area truck drivers and warehouse workers. Jimmy Hoffa rose through this local starting in the 1930s, and by 1946 he had become its president, using it as the springboard to lead the entire International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1957 onward. Even after federal prosecutors sent him to prison in the late 1960s, Hoffa kept his ties to Local 299, and he took a position there again after his release in 1971, in the years before his disappearance in 1975. The local still represents Detroit-area Teamsters from the same building today.
