01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Ask anyone in Detroit where to get pierogi in August and you'll hear the same answer: Sweetest Heart of Mary, the Polish church on Russell Street just up from Eastern Market. Its Pierogi Festival has been going for more than four decades; 2021 was the 40th, and Fox 2 has called it the largest Polish festival in metro Detroit. For three days you get Polish food, a beer tent and grill, polka bands, folk dancers, a bake sale, kids' games and raffles, plus a reverent polka Mass on Saturday. Take the church tour, too: the Gothic brick church is as stunning inside as it is outside.
