Mike Banks founded Underground Resistance in Detroit in 1989 with Jeff Mills and later Robert Hood, building it into one of techno's most influential and uncompromising labels, and he co-founded Submerge soon after as its record distribution arm. Around 2002 the operation moved into a 1910 brick building on East Grand Boulevard, a space with no sign out front that insiders simply call Somewhere in Detroit. The basement holds the Somewhere in Detroit record store, the upper floor houses Underground Resistance's offices and studios, and the main floor is Exhibit 3000, a museum built by Submerge to preserve the history of Detroit techno through record sleeves, flyers and artifacts from the scene's earliest days. Banks still runs the operation from this building today.
