Bernhard Stroh, a German immigrant brewer, started what became the Stroh Brewery Company in Detroit in 1850, and the business grew through the following decades into a major brewing complex on Gratiot Avenue near Eastern Market. Four generations of the Stroh family ran the company from that site, turning it into one of the largest independent breweries in the country and a fixture of Detroit's industrial east side for well over a century. Rising costs and an aging plant finally caught up with the brewery, and in 1985 Stroh's shut down its Gratiot Avenue operations for good, shifting production elsewhere. The old brewery buildings came down in 1986, and the site was redeveloped as Brewery Park, now home to Crain Communications' Detroit headquarters.
