03 / The story of this place

What was here?

For about six decades this hotel at Van Dyke and 15 Mile Road ran as the Sterling Inn and later as the Wyndham Garden Sterling Heights. Locals knew it for its indoor water park with slides and a lazy river, plus the Loon River Cafe and a big banquet and conference center that hosted weddings, conferences and banquets. Maintenance problems piled up in the late 2010s, and it closed in December 2020. Developer Repvblik started turning the hotel wing into apartments in July 2022, tore down the section with the Loon River Cafe and banquet halls, and opened The Block at Sterling Heights in January 2024.

  • Indoor water park with a lazy river
  • Loon River Cafe and banquet center
  • Now a 213-unit apartment complex
What’s there now?
The Block at Sterling Heights, a 213-unit apartment complex in the former hotel wing (opened January 2024); the restaurant and banquet wing was torn down to free up land along Van Dyke.
