Around 1900, Alexander Lewis built a house on the shore of Lake St. Clair in what is now Grosse Pointe Farms, at a time when the lakefront was filling with substantial homes for Detroit's well-off families. Lewis went on to serve as a local mayor, and his house eventually passed into the hands of St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, which adapted it as its parish house rather than tearing it down. The state recognized the value of the site in 1992, designating the Lewis house and the surrounding church complex a Michigan State Historic Site. The building still functions as parish offices today, tucked among the church's newer buildings right on the lakeshore.
