01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
The first weekend of May, Hamtramck, the historically Polish city surrounded by Detroit, celebrates around St. Florian Church. The Strawberry Festival is named for its strawberry desserts, but it's just as much about Polish food: pierogi, kielbasa, homemade pastries and the parish dinner. Saturday opens with the Fireman's Mass, then local favorites the Polish Muslims take over the tent; Sunday brings kids' activities, hourly church tours and the Gwiazda Dancers. The festival reached its 51st edition in 2019, and the City of Hamtramck still counts it among its signature annual events.
