01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
Polish immigrants working in Hamtramck's auto plants founded St. Florian parish in 1907, then raised the money to build this landmark, dedicated on October 21, 1928. Gothic Revival master Ralph Adams Cram designed it, and it won an American Architect award the next year. The spire climbs nearly 200 feet, the tallest point in Hamtramck, and inside you'll find seating for 1,200, a blue ribbed vault, windows of five Polish saints and altars finished in real gold leaf. Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II, said Mass here in 1969.
