Father Józef Dąbrowski, a Polish-born priest who became one of the most influential builders of Polish Catholic institutions in America, founded SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Detroit in 1885 to train priests for the country's growing Polish immigrant parishes. Bishop Caspar Borgess approved construction of the seminary's building on St. Aubin Avenue between Forest Avenue and Garfield Street, on Detroit's near east side, where Dąbrowski ran the school until his death in 1903. Enrollment kept growing past what the Detroit building could hold, and in 1909 the seminary relocated to a larger campus at the former Michigan Military Academy grounds in Orchard Lake, northwest of the city, where it operated for over a century as one of the country's last Polish-language seminaries before closing in 2022. The original Detroit site sat inside a stretch of the near east side that saw heavy demolition and redevelopment across the 20th century, and no trace of Dąbrowski's seminary building is documented as still standing at St. Aubin and Forest today. The move to Orchard Lake, though, carried Dąbrowski's Detroit-founded institution forward for more than a hundred years.
