Southfield High School opened its doors in 1951 to serve the fast-growing Detroit suburb, and within its first two decades it produced two very different kinds of notable alumni. Ted Simmons, who would go on to an eight-time All-Star career as a catcher in Major League Baseball, attended Southfield High from 1963 to 1967. A few years earlier, Max Wright, later known for his television work including the sitcom ALF, was active in the school's theater program and graduated in 1961. The Southfield school district eventually rebranded the building as Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology, reflecting a shift toward specialized arts and technology programming. The school continues to serve Southfield students today, one of the longer-running public high schools in Oakland County, with generations of students following in Simmons's and Wright's footsteps through its halls.
