Southeastern High School opened in 1917 on Detroit's far east side, in an area still rural enough at the time to earn students the nickname 'the Jungaleers,' a name the school kept for its sports teams. Rapid population growth tied to the auto industry forced an expansion of the Malcomson and Higginbotham-designed building in 1929. Rapper Dej Loaf, born Deja Trimble, attended Southeastern from 2005 to 2009, playing basketball for the school before graduating and going on to a recording career that took off with the 2014 single 'Try Me.' The school has since been reorganized several times within Detroit's public school system and now operates as Southeastern High School of Technology and Law, focused on career and legal-studies programming. It remains an active Detroit Public Schools Community District high school on its original Fairview Street campus.
