01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

SOMi Sauna, a mobile sauna from Southeast Michigan, parks on Belle Isle Beach on select weekends this fall and winter, on the sand just west of the Beach House. The hot room runs 180–205°F (82–96°C) on two tiers of cedar for ten people. You ladle water on the stones, and the wave of steam is what Finns call löyly. To cool off you walk into the river, about 60°F (16°C) in October and in the mid-30s by February; a beach chair cools you just as well if you would rather stay dry. Across the water are downtown and the MacArthur Bridge, and in winter the sun sets almost right behind the towers, which is why evening sessions fill first. It runs in rain and snow.

  1. Heat: 10–20 minutes in the 180–205°F (82–96°C) cedar room. Heat gathers on the upper bench; the steam wave from water on the stones is löyly. Check the room before you ladle: it should suit everybody.
  2. Cool: the Detroit River is about 60°F (16°C) in October and in the mid-30s by February; 30 seconds is plenty. Walk in, stand still and let the first gasp pass. A beach chair cools you just as well if you stay dry.
  3. Repeat: switch as often as you like; nothing in your 75 minutes runs on a clock. Most people do two or three rounds. Keep drinking: you lose about a pint an hour.

Bring

  • Swimsuit: required, this is a public beach. Easiest worn under your clothes.
  • Towel and sandals for the walk to the water.
  • Water, more than you think: drink before you arrive and keep a bottle with you.
  • Warm layers for afterwards if it is cold.
  • Something salty and an electrolyte drink for after: you lose salt as well as water.

Rules

  • Arrive 10 minutes early so you start on time.
  • Every guest signs a waiver, including guests you booked for: about a minute on a phone, valid all season. Add their emails at checkout and the links go to them; anyone arriving without one scans the code on the sauna door. Waiver ↗
  • Ages 18 and over only.
  • Come sober: heat and alcohol both lower blood pressure. It is the one rule they hold firmly.
  • Walk into the water, never jump; come out if your hands stop working properly.
  • Pregnant or managing a heart condition? Talk to your doctor first.
  • Step out whenever you want, or drop to the lower bench.
