Vaughan and Lana Schneider founded Small Planet in 1974 on Ann Street in East Lansing, and in 1991 it moved to M.A.C. Avenue, where it hit its stride in the alternative-rock boom. For 26 years it gave a stage to Mid-Michigan bands such as Wally Pleasant, Groove Spoon, Mustard Plug and The Verve Pipe and booked rising names like Kid Rock and Weezer, plus Southern Culture on the Skids and Big Country. It was demolished in 2000 for a retail and apartment development, with the owners receiving an $830,000 settlement, and a 2009 revival at 16800 Chandler Road (with the Electric Six and Dinosaur Jr.) was short-lived.
