Shrine Catholic High School traces to 1941, when Little Flower High School for Girls opened at 13 Mile and Woodward next to the National Shrine of the Little Flower, the parish made famous nationwide by radio priest Father Charles Coughlin, who helped fund its construction. A companion boys' school, Shrine High School, developed alongside it, and in 1965 the schools combined into a single inter-parish institution under the Shrine name after Our Lady of Fatima parish joined as a sponsor. Keegan-Michael Key, later of the sketch duo Key & Peele, graduated from Shrine in 1989, and actress Kristen Bell took part in its drama and music programs in the 1990s before graduating and moving on to a career on stage and screen. The school today operates as Shrine Catholic High School alongside an elementary school and a middle school academy under the umbrella of Shrine Catholic Schools, still on its original Royal Oak campus.
