Salem High School sits on the sprawling Plymouth-Canton Educational Park campus in Canton, a shared complex built to serve the fast-growing western Wayne County suburbs. Actor and trained chef David Burtka, later known for his television and Broadway work and for co-hosting cooking segments, grew up in the area and graduated from Salem in 1993. The Educational Park format, with several separate high schools sharing one large campus and its athletic facilities, was unusual for Michigan when it opened and remains one of the largest public school campuses in the state. Salem continues to operate today as part of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, one of the larger districts in the region. Thousands of students have passed through its halls since Burtka's class, in a school system that still draws families to Canton for its size and programs.
