Rum Runners opened on June 1, 1996 at Michigan Avenue and Larch Street, across from the brand-new Lugnuts ballpark, as the very first Rum Runners Dueling Piano Bar & Grill. Founder Michael picked the dueling-piano format, two pianists and a crowd-participation show, to bring a tropical vacation bar to Michigan. In Lansing it billed itself as bachelorette headquarters and let fans in free with a same-day Lugnuts ticket stub, while the chain spread to Indiana, North Carolina and Florida. The chain's website still listed Lansing in 2011–2012, but by July 2014 it was gone from the list.
