The cinema opened in July 1972 as the Lantern Theatre, part of the United General Theatres mini-cinema chain, in a shopping center on Van Dyke Road in northern Macomb County. It had two screens and 320 seats. The same family ran it as the Romeo Theatre for about 40 years. In August 2026 the owners announced it would close permanently in mid-September 2026, pointing to the year-long pandemic shutdown, the 2023 strikes that thinned the film supply and audiences moving to streaming. A new, non-theater business is taking over the space.
