Make time for these
Recreation Park opened in 1879 on a plot near Brush and Brady streets, and by 1881 it was home field for the Detroit Wolverines of the National League. Catcher Charlie Bennett anchored the team behind the plate from 1881 to 1888, and outfielder Sam Thompson, one of the era's best hitters, played here from 1885 through the Wolverines' pennant-winning 1887 season. The team drew big crowds to Recreation Park before financial trouble broke it up after 1888; the franchise folded and the park's baseball days ended not long after. The site later became part of Detroit's medical district, and today Detroit Medical Center buildings stand where the outfield once was. A historical marker near the south entrance of the Brush Mall, roughly where left field used to be, tells the story of the ballpark and its 1887 champions.
