Ralph J. Bunche Preparatory Academy is a Detroit public school serving students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade on Macomb Street on the city's near east side. It is named for Ralph Bunche, who spent part of his childhood in Detroit before his family moved west, and who went on to become a pioneering diplomat and the first Black American to win the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in 1950 for his mediation work on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The school sits near the blocks where the Bunche family once lived, and it keeps his name and legacy visible in the neighborhood today as an active public school within the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
