An 1898 copper smelter on the Keweenaw with its machinery still in place; summer tours and a Halloween haunt.

01 / The story of this place
Make time for these
The Quincy Mining Company built it in 1898 on the Portage Canal to smelt its own copper and custom work from neighboring mines. When it closed in 1971 everything was left in place, so the 1890s Corliss steam engines and Walker casting wheel are still there. The operator calls it the oldest historic smelter site in the world, and it processed nearly a billion pounds of copper. It's part of the Quincy Mining Company National Historic Landmark District and has been owned since 2014 by the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission. On October 29–31, 2026, Michigan Tech Theatre stages its Halloween haunt here.
