QLINE stopCanfield Street

The official QLINE site calls Canfield its “Dine & Drink” stop, and for good reason. To the south is the Majestic complex: the theater, a café, the Magic Stick club and the 1913 Garden Bowl, the oldest continuously operating bowling alley in the country. Across the street stands the David Whitney House of 1894, a restaurant since 1986 behind its rose-pink jasper walls, and right by the stop is MOCAD, a contemporary art museum in a former car dealership designed by Albert Kahn. The 2018 one-year report counted Canfield among the line’s busiest stops.

In 1934, 35 feet were sliced off the front of the Garden Bowl when Woodward was widened to its present width. The argument over the widening had dragged on since 1874 and was only settled in 1932; John W. Chandler of the Woodward Avenue Improvement Association vowed not to shave until he had the landowners’ consent in hand.

The streetcar’s first year wasn’t quiet here either: on November 6, 2017 a bus, a car and a QLINE car collided at Canfield, three people were hurt and service stopped until about 4:15 p.m. A traction substation at Willis Street, just south of the stop, feeds the overhead wire. The stop’s 2017 sponsors were JPMorgan Chase and Compuware, on a shared sign.
