01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

In the 1960s the university had no proper proscenium theater: Hill Auditorium was too big and the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre too small. In 1963 Eugene and Sadye Power and their son Philip stepped in with the gift that built it. The Power Center opened in 1971 with the world premiere of The Grass Harp, based on Truman Capote's novel. Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates designed it, with a mirrored glass wall that reflects the park next door and two big spiral staircases climbing from the orchestra to the balcony. Two hand-woven tapestries hang in the lobby: Roy Lichtenstein's Modern Tapestry and Pablo Picasso's Volutes.

  1. Open since 1971
  2. 1,313 seats, 455 of them in the balcony
  3. No seat is more than 72 feet from the stage
  4. Lichtenstein and Picasso tapestries in the lobby
  5. No elevator to the balcony
