01 / The story of this place

Make time for these

The trains run on the old London and Port Stanley Railway, built by hand from 1853; the first train reached Port Stanley on July 5, 1856. Between 1915 and 1957 more than 28 million riders took its electric trains to the beach and the Stork Club pavilion, where Louis Armstrong and Guy Lombardo played. A washout ended service in 1982, and local volunteers had trains running again a year later. Today diesels from the 1940s and '50s pull open and closed cars rebuilt from cabooses, carrying about 25,000 riders a year.
