Pontiac General Hospital was founded in the early 1900s as Oakland County's first hospital, built and initially owned by the city of Pontiac as a safety-net provider. In the 1960s, pathologist Jack Kevorkian, who would later become internationally notorious for assisting in the deaths of terminally ill patients, worked here and conducted controversial experiments transfusing blood from the recently dead into living patients. The city sold the hospital in 1993, and it operated afterward as North Oakland Medical Centers, later Doctors' Hospital of Michigan, before returning to the Pontiac General Hospital name. The hospital survived two bankruptcies, in 2008 and 2015, along with staff layoffs and accreditation troubles, but its owners and administrators maintained it never fully closed, and it continues to operate on West Huron Street today.
