Plowshares calls itself Michigan's only professional African American theatre, out to preserve, present and produce African American experiences. It has no house of its own; in 2026 it staged a world premiere at the Marlene Boll Theatre.

Make time for these
Plowshares Theatre Company's mission is to preserve, present and produce African American experiences. It's led by producing artistic director Gary Anderson, a 2016 Kresge Artist Fellow and the Detroit News Michiganian of the Year in 2002. The company doesn't have a theatre of its own. Its 2026 Black Theatre 100 season marked a century since W.E.B. Du Bois called for Black theatres, with staged readings at TechTown Detroit and the world premiere of Candido Tirado's Roberto Clemente: A Diamond Within at the Marlene Boll Theatre, June 5–28, 2026. It also runs the New Griots Initiative for emerging artists and the Harambee fundraising campaign.

A professional contemporary dance company since 1980, founded by four Wayne State dance grads. In its 47th season (2026–27) it dances fall, winter and spring concerts at the Marlene Boll Theatre downtown.
