The Pines was opened on May 22, 1941 in Houghton Lake by W.J. Olson, who owned many Michigan theaters at the time. Cinema Treasures credits the hunter's-lodge design to C. Howard Crane. Inside you get a 40-foot log cathedral ceiling, a parquet floor and a collection of mounted game animals. Today it shows first-run films in digital projection, one feature at a time. It says viewers of 9&10 News voted it Northern Michigan's No. 1 movie theater.
