Detroit People Mover stationGrand Circus Park

The station clings to the first two floors of the David Whitney Building at the park and Woodward Avenue. There has been a stop here since 1976, when the Detroit Citizens’ Railway (later the Detroit Downtown Trolley) heritage streetcar turned here until 2003. The People Mover arrived on July 31, 1987, and rail returned to Woodward with the QLINE on May 12, 2017. The D2A2 express bus to Ann Arbor stops here too, as do SMART’s FAST Michigan and Woodward lines.

The station closed in 1999 with the David Whitney Building, reopening in April 2001 but reachable only by an outside stair until 2015. It closed again on August 16, 2014 to gain a new lobby and lift with the building’s restoration; for part of the work the line was split, with riders transferring at Millender Center. It reopened on June 13, 2015 and is today lift-only.

On the platform stands J. Seward Johnson’s “Catching Up”: a life-size bronze man reading the real May 21, 1987 Detroit News, with the Chrysler–American Motors merger on the front and ads for Crowley’s and Farmer Jack. Legend says a coin toss chose the News, leaving the Free Press folded on his briefcase. In 2024 its guideway columns gained colour lighting, and with 129,895 boardings it was the third-busiest station.
