01 / Story

The station’s story

Broadway is one of the five free-standing stations, in the Broadway Avenue historic district. The DTC lists it for the Detroit Opera House, Ford Field, the Gem Theatre, Music Hall, the Boll Family YMCA and several downtown hotels (The Siren, Element, Metropolitan, Shinola); Broadway and Grand Circus Park are roughly equidistant from Comerica Park, and the DTC names both.

Inside are “The Blue Nile” panels by Charles McGee, one of Detroit’s most influential painters, and tiles by Jun Kaneko. In 2024 Charles “Chazz” Miller painted the exterior City Walls mural “Welcome to Date Night in Paradise”.

It reopened in the second post-pandemic wave on June 2, 2022. It saw 75,501 boardings in 2019 and 53,210 in 2024, filling up on Lions, Tigers and concert days. In autumn 2026 the escalator is out, so use the lift.

What you see from the car

From the platform you look along Broadway toward the Music Hall and the Detroit Athletic Club; on game days this is where you first hear the roar from Comerica Park.
